The Tomioka Silk Mill in Tomioka, Gunma Prefecture, is a history buff’s ideal destination for a day trip from Tokyo. Visitors to the mill can learn about its role in Japan’s modernization in the Meiji era (1868–1912), silk-reeling technology, and the lives of the mill’s women workers.
