K’gari

K’gari (formerly known as Fraser Island), located off the coast of Queensland, AUSTRALIA, is the world’s largest sand island, stretching over 120 kilometers in length. The Butchulla people, its traditional owners, named it “K’gari,” which translates to “paradise.” It is a unique geological wonder where massive sand dunes support lush subtropical rainforests—the only place on Earth where this phenomenon occurs.

Unique Ecosystems: Visitors are drawn to the island’s more than 100 freshwater “perched” lakes (which sit above the water table) and its spectacular 75 Mile Beach.

Consideration

Vehicle Requirements: The island is almost entirely sand; you must have a high-clearance 4WD vehicle with low-range capacity. Driving on the beach requires understanding tide times to avoid getting stranded.
Permits: You are legally required to obtain both a vehicle access permit and a camping permit (if staying overnight) before entering the Great Sandy National Park.
Dingo Safety: K’gari dingoes are wild animals. Do not feed them, keep all food securely stored, and always supervise children.
Preparedness: Mobile phone reception is very intermittent. Carry a first-aid kit, enough water, and ensure your vehicle is mechanically sound.
