The Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia is one of the world’s most surreal landscapes, located in the heart of central TURKIYE. It is defined by a bizarre “moonscape” of volcanic topography, primarily known for its “fairy chimneys”—tall, conical rock formations sculpted by millions of years of wind and water erosion.
The region is a blend of natural wonder and human ingenuity. For centuries, inhabitants carved homes, churches, monasteries, and entire underground cities—some reaching eight levels deep—directly into the soft, volcanic “tuff” rock. The Göreme Open-Air Museum is the heart of this heritage, housing a collection of rock-cut Byzantine churches featuring vividly colored frescoes from the 10th to 12th centuries.
Attraction

Inscribed in 1985, the site was recognized for both natural and cultural criteria:

- Byzantine Art: The rock-hewn churches preserve some of the most important examples of Byzantine religious art, showcasing a unique post-Iconoclastic period style.
- Historical Refuge: The site serves as a vital record of early Christian history, illustrating how communities used the landscape for refuge and religious practice during periods of persecution and invasion.
Gateway
There is no airport inside the national park itself, but it is easily accessed via two regional airports:
- Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport (NAV): The closest airport (approx. 40 km from Göreme). It is smaller and offers a shorter transfer time (30–40 minutes).
- Kayseri Erkilet Airport (ASR): Slightly further away (approx. 75 km), but it offers a much larger volume of flights and better connectivity to international hubs like Istanbul.
- Lodging: Towns like Göreme, Ürgüp, and Uçhisar are the main tourist hubs, offering abundant lodging options, particularly the region’s famous cave hotels.
When
- Late Spring (April to June) and Early Autumn (September to October): These months offer the most comfortable temperatures (15–25°C) for hiking and balloon flights, with moderate crowds.
- Winter: Offers a magical, snow-covered landscape and lower prices, though hiking can be difficult and balloon flights are frequently canceled due to weather.
Consideration
- Balloon Bookings: Always book your hot air balloon flight for your first or second morning. Flights are highly weather-dependent and frequently canceled; having extra days allows for rescheduling.
- Physical Fitness: Exploring the underground cities and many of the valleys involves navigating narrow, steep, and uneven terrain.
- Respectful Conduct: When visiting the rock-cut churches, maintain a quiet demeanor. Do not touch or photograph frescoes where strictly prohibited, as camera flash can accelerate the fading of the art.
- Cave Hotel Quality: Research your accommodation thoroughly; some lower-end “cave” rooms can be dark or damp. Look for reputable, well-reviewed hotels.

If you like active holidays, Cappadocia offers some of the most scenic trails for a bike ride or hike through these unusual surroundings. But the best way to view Cappadocia is certainly from the air, in a hot air balloon. The rides are scheduled at dawn, with spectacular views of the unique Mars-like landscape below, a stunning sunrise above and hundreds of colourful balloons in between.

The famed fairy chimneys are truly amazing, “Lord of the Rings” come to life. Part of our trip was spent camping, and one of our sites put our tents directly in the midst of a cluster of fairy chimneys. Cameras clicked all around, for who could imagine a more unique campsite anywhere.
Hot air balloons are tremendously popular in this area, and the sight of all the brilliantly colored balloons hovering over Cappadocia’s unique topography is nothing short of spectacular.
On the final day we visited the open air museum of Goreme, consisting of a vast monastic complex with rock-cut churches. Stunning frescoes (some with the brilliant blue of lapis lazuli) graced the ceilings. These monasteries ranged from the 10th to 12th centuries (hence the term “New Church” used at one point interestingly meant one from the 12th century).

During the course of my stay in Cappadocia, it was not the cave living experience that left a lasting imprint—it was an appreciation for mankind’s resilience, ability to adapt to nature’s landforms, and legacy of discovery, religion, and culture through the centuries that would form an everlasting impression.

You have to do a hot air balloon ride. The views are astonishing.
