Garajonay National Park is a mystical, emerald-hued landscape located in the heart of La Gomera, one of the Canary Islands in Spain. Spanning approximately 40 square kilometers, the park is famous for its dense “laurisilva” (laurel forest), a lush, subtropical rainforest that once covered much of Southern Europe and Northern Africa millions of years ago but has since largely disappeared.
The park is defined by its ancient laurel trees, which are often shrouded in a permanent, haunting mist. This cloud forest creates a unique microclimate that traps moisture, feeding numerous springs and streams that sustain the island’s ecosystem. The terrain is rugged, characterized by volcanic rock formations (such as the towering basalt plugs known as Roques) and deep, verdant valleys. It is a sanctuary for unique flora and fauna, boasting a high degree of endemism—meaning many of its plants and animals are found nowhere else on Earth.
Attraction
- A “Prehistoric” Atmosphere: The mist-covered, moss-draped laurel forest feels like a journey back in time, attracting hikers who seek a unique, almost supernatural atmosphere.
- World-Class Hiking: With a network of over 18 well-maintained footpaths, the park is the premier destination for trekkers. Trails vary from easy loops to challenging climbs, all offering breathtaking views of the “sea of trees.”
- Geological Wonders: Travelers are drawn to the dramatic volcanic Roques, particularly the Roque de Agando, which rise sharply above the forest canopy and offer stunning vistas—on a clear day, you can see the neighboring islands of Tenerife, La Palma, and El Hierro.
- Local Legends: The park is steeped in folklore, including the tragic tale of the lovers Gara and Jonay, for whom the park is named.

World Heritage
Inscribed in 1986, it was recognized for its outstanding universal value:
- Rare Ecosystem: It preserves the largest and best-preserved continuous expanse of Canary Island laurel forest, a rare relic of the Tertiary period.
- Biological Hotspot: The park is a natural laboratory for evolution, supporting an exceptionally large number of endemic species. Its isolation has allowed for the survival of plants and animals that have vanished elsewhere due to climatic shifts.
Gateway
San Sebastián de la Gomera is the main gateway town, as it serves as the island’s primary port.
- Airport/Logistics: While La Gomera has a small domestic airport (GMZ), most international travelers fly into Tenerife South Airport (TFS) and take a ferry (approx. 50 minutes) to San Sebastián.
- Lodging: San Sebastián offers various accommodations, ranging from historic stays like the Parador de La Gomera to comfortable hotels such as the Hotel Torre del Conde.
When
- March to June: This is considered the best period, especially for plant lovers, as the island is lush and blooming.
- General Climate: The weather is mild year-round. However, winter (November–February) is rainier, which keeps the forest exceptionally green, while summer (July–September) is warmer and drier, offering the most reliable conditions for hiking.
Consideration
- Pack Accordingly: Due to the high humidity (75–90%) and frequent mist, the forest can be cool and damp even when the coast is sunny. Always carry waterproof gear and layers.
- Vehicle Rental: While buses exist, renting a car is highly recommended to reach different trailheads across the island efficiently.
- Respect Nature: The ecosystem is fragile. Stay strictly on marked trails, do not pick plants, and follow local fire prevention rules, as wildfires are a significant threat to the laurisilva.
