Where Viking royalty carved the birthplace of the Danish nation
The UNESCO World Heritage site titled “Jelling Mounds, Runic Stones and Church” is a premier Viking Age monumental complex located in the town of Jelling in central Jutland, DENMARK. Originating in the 10th century under the reigns of King Gorm the Old and his son King Harald Bluetooth, the site physically captures the dramatic transition of Scandinavian society from paganism to Christianity.
The site comprises two massive flat-topped turf burial mounds measuring 70 meters in diameter and up to 11 meters high, positioned symmetrically north and south. Standing between the mounds is a whitewashed stone parish church erected over the site of three earlier wooden churches. In the churchyard stand two carved granite runic stones protected inside climate-controlled glass enclosures. The smaller stone was raised by King Gorm to honor his wife, Queen Thyra. The larger, three-sided stone—often referred to as “Denmark’s Birth Certificate”—was raised by Harald Bluetooth. It features intricate dragon knotwork, an inscription commemorating the unification of Denmark and Norway, and the earliest known depiction of Christ in Scandinavia.
Attraction
The Jelling complex attracts history enthusiasts, archaeologists, and travelers worldwide who come to stand at the founding birthplace of the Danish nation. As one of Northern Europe’s most significant Viking Age monuments, it offers visitors a tangible link to legendary Norse rulers who shaped European history.
Visitors flock to Jelling to examine the detailed runic carvings, marveling at the ancient inscriptions and the celebrated depiction of Christ. Climbing to the top of the North and South mounds provides panoramic views over the churchyard and the excavated perimeter layout of the original wooden palisade and ship setting. Directly across from the churchyard sits Kongernes Jelling (Home of the Viking Kings), an innovative, interactive state visitor center. Through digital exhibits, holographic displays, and roof terrace viewpoints, the center brings the stories of Viking kings, pagan rituals, and Christian conversion vividly to life for visitors of all ages.

World Heritage
Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994 under Cultural Criterion (iii), the Jelling complex is celebrated for its historic and religious significance:
- Criterion (iii) – Outstanding Cultural Witness: The Jelling mounds, runic stones, and church are exceptional physical manifestations of pagan Nordic culture and its historic conversion to Christianity during the 10th century. The site brilliantly synthesizes both religious eras: pagan burial barrows built over royal tombs coexisting with a Christian runic stone and church representing the triumph of the new faith across Scandinavia.
