Fertö / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape *(AT)

The Fertő / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape is a stunning transboundary World Heritage site shared by AUSTRIA and Hungary. Centered around Lake Neusiedl—the westernmost representative of the Eurasian steppe lakes—this region is a unique meeting point of Alpine, sub-Mediterranean, and Pannonian climatic zones.

The site encompasses a shallow, salt-water lake and its surrounding wetlands, alkaline marshes, and reed beds. For over 8,000 years, this area has served as a crossroads for different cultures and peoples. The cultural landscape is defined by its traditional settlement structures, centuries-old viticulture, animal husbandry, and magnificent 18th- and 19th-century aristocratic palaces, such as the Esterházy Palace (in Hungary).
