Diverse Gradient of Ecosystems: Spanning 12,481 hectares, the reserve encompasses a rare, uninterrupted transition of habitats from coastal mangroves, sandy beaches, coral reefs, and wetlands to lowland dipterocarp forests and montane ridge vegetation.
The Meromictic Lake: Located within the reserve at Pantai Kerachut, this is Malaysia’s only meromictic lake—a highly rare hydro-geological anomaly where a top layer of cool freshwater and a bottom layer of warm seawater coexist without mixing. It is one of only a handful left in Asia.
Sanctuary for Threatened Species: The pristine core zones protect vital populations of endemic and endangered wildlife, including the dusky leaf monkey (langur), the Sunda pangolin, the smooth otter, the Irrawaddy dolphin, and the rare Penang slipper orchid (Paphiopedilum barbatum).
