A fairytale valley of colorful alpine lakes and waterfalls
The UNESCO World Heritage site titled “Jiuzhaigou Valley Scenic and Historic Interest Area” is a reserve located in the northern part of Sichuan Province, southwestern CHINA. Situated on the southern slope of the Min Shan mountains about 270 kilometers north of Chengdu, the valley stretches across 72,000 hectares. “Jiuzhaigou” translates to “Nine Village Valley,” named after the nine traditional Tibetan villages strung along its length.
The site comprises three main connected valleys—Rize, Zechawa, and Shuzheng—forming a distinct Y-shape. Reaching altitudes from 2,000 meters to over 4,500 meters, Jiuzhaigou is famous for its high-altitude karst landscapes, travertine terraces, and forested ecosystems. The valley is characterized by multi-tiered waterfalls, snow-capped peaks, and over a hundred alpine lakes (haizi) known for extraordinarily clear, turquoise-to-emerald waters caused by high calcium carbonate concentrations and underwater mineral deposits.
Attraction
Jiuzhaigou is internationally renowned for its surreal, fairytale-like natural landscapes that shift dramatically in color across seasons. Travelers, nature lovers, and photographers visit to witness some of Asia’s most spectacular body-of-water scenes.
Visitors flock to Five Flower Lake (Wuhua Hai) and Mirror Lake (Jing Hai) to see submerged ancient trees preserved perfectly in crystal-clear waters that reflect surrounding mountains. The site features massive travertine cascades, including Pearl Shoal Waterfall (Zhenzhutan Pu) and Nuorilang Waterfall, one of China’s widest highland waterfalls. Beyond the lakes, tourists experience authentic local Tibetan culture, visiting traditional whitewashed villages, viewing colorful prayer flags, and tasting regional Tibetan yak-butter tea and highland barley products.

World Heritage
Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992, Jiuzhaigou is recognized under Natural Criterion (vii) for its exceptional aesthetic and natural values:
- Criterion (vii) – Superb Natural Beauty and Aesthetic Value: The site contains narrow conic karst landforms, high-altitude glacial landforms, and a series of multi-colored travertine lakes and waterfalls set against jagged mountain backdrops and primeval forest ecosystems.
Gateway
Travelers planning a visit to Jiuzhaigou Valley can access the property via two practical Chinese gateway locations featuring public IATA-listed airports searchable directly in IATA’s directory, lodging options, transport infrastructure, and tour guide services:
- Chengdu (Primary Regional Gateway):
- Airports: Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (IATA Code: CTU; ICAO Code: ZUUU) and Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (IATA Code: TFU; ICAO Code: ZUTF).
- Infrastructure and Distance: Situated approximately 400 kilometers south of Jiuzhaigou. As Sichuan’s capital, Chengdu operates major international and domestic aviation hubs searchable in IATA’s public directory. Chengdu offers extensive lodging ranging from luxury hotels to boutique hostels. The high-speed railway (Sichuan-Qinghai Railway) connects Chengdu East Railway Station to Zhenjiangguan or Songpan stations near Jiuzhaigou in about 1.5 to 2 hours, followed by direct tourist shuttle buses to the park entrance. Certified tour operators run daily excursions from Chengdu.
- Songpan County / Jiuzhaigou Town (Local Direct Gateway):
- Airport: Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport (IATA Code: JZH; ICAO Code: ZUJZ).
- Infrastructure and Distance: Located in Songpan County, approximately 88 kilometers south of the Jiuzhaigou park entrance. JZH is a high-altitude public airport indexed in IATA’s directory operating domestic flights from major Chinese cities. The surrounding area and Zhangzha Town (just outside the park gates) offer numerous hotels, guesthouses, local airport shuttle buses, taxis, and guided tour services.
When
The absolute peak time to visit Jiuzhaigou Valley is during Autumn (October to early November), though Spring and Early Summer (April to June) are also excellent:
- Autumn (October to early November): Offers the most famous scenery, as alpine forests transform into brilliant yellow, orange, and red foliage that contrasts against vivid blue and turquoise lakes. Daytime temperatures range between 10°C and 18°C (50°F to 64°F).
- Spring and Early Summer (April to June): Features blooming wild orchids and azaleas, melting snow feeding full-flowing waterfalls, and pleasant daytime temperatures (15°C to 22°C / 59°F to 72°F).
- Summer (July to August): Warm and green (20°C to 25°C / 68°F to 77°F) with maximum water levels, though it coincides with the rainy season and heavy domestic holiday crowds.
- Winter (December to February): Cold (-5°C to 8°C / 23°F to 46°F), quiet, and peaceful; waterfalls freeze into massive blue ice formations set against snow-covered pines.
Consideration
- High Altitude Awareness: Park elevations range from 2,000 meters at the entrance to over 3,100 meters at Long Lake (Chang Hai). Travelers should stay hydrated, avoid strenuous exertion on day one, and consider altitude sickness medication if sensitive.
- Strict Daily Visitor Quotas: To preserve the ecology, the national park enforces a daily cap on visitor entries. Tickets must be booked in advance online using a passport or national ID.
- Internal Transportation: Private vehicles are prohibited inside the valley. Visitors use the park’s eco-friendly sightseeing buses, which run continuously between key stations along the Y-shaped valley routes.
- Weather and Attire: High-altitude mountain weather changes rapidly. Layered clothing, a windproof and waterproof jacket, sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses, hat), and comfortable walking shoes are required.
- Currency and Digital Payments: Chinese yuan (CNY) is used. Digital payment systems (WeChat Pay and Alipay linked to international credit cards) are accepted almost everywhere; keeping small cash amounts is helpful for small stalls.

Jiuzhaigao is China’s answer to Yosemite.

On our first day, I walked about six miles around the park’s Shuzeng Valley. Its small lakes are jewels, threaded along the valley floor like a string of pearls, often separated from one another by exquisite waterfalls. Under the blue summer skies, the water sparkled, the reflections of the clouds and trees clear and crisp. In Peacock Lake, we watched silky smooth carp slither through the water. Birdlife in Jiuzhaigou Park is varied and attracts birding enthusiasts from the United States and Britain.

Apart from panda tracking, Jiuzhaigou is by far one of the most beautiful landscapes in all of China.
