Extinct volcanic slopes sheltering endangered Grauer’s gorilla populations
The UNESCO World Heritage site titled “Kahuzi-Biega National Park” is a vast protected biodiversity sanctuary located in eastern DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF TEH CONGO (DRC). Situated near the western bank of Lake Kivu and the Rwandan border within South Kivu Province, the park covers 600,000 hectares of primary rainforest. Established in 1970 by Belgian photographer and conservationist Adrien Deschryver, the reserve takes its name from two extinct volcanoes set within its boundaries: Mount Kahuzi (3,308 meters) and Mount Biega (2,790 meters).
The property features a rare, unbroken ecological corridor spanning from dense equatorial lowland rainforests at 600 meters elevation up to Afro-montane, bamboo forests, and sub-alpine vegetation on the mountain peaks. It protects a complex hydrology drained by the Luka and Lugulu rivers, forming a critical basin within the Albertine Rift Valley and Congo River systems.
Attraction
Kahuzi-Biega National Park draws international wildlife enthusiasts, primatologists, and adventurous travelers seeking an intimate encounter with Africa’s endangered megafauna. It stands as the primary global stronghold for trekking and observing habituated eastern lowland gorillas (Grauer’s gorilla) in their natural jungle environment.
Visitors travel to the park headquarters at Tshivanga to trek through bamboo thickets alongside experienced rangers to track gorilla families. Beyond gorilla trekking, nature lovers hike up the extinct volcanic slopes of Mount Kahuzi to view panoramic vistas across Lake Kivu. The park’s diverse ecosystems harbor 136 mammal species and 349 bird species, allowing tourists to spot endemic primates like Hoest’s monkeys, chimpanzees, forest elephants, and rare bird species set against pristine Afrotropical forest canopies.

World Heritage
Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980, Kahuzi-Biega National Park is recognized under Natural Criterion (x) for its outstanding biological diversity and critical habitats for endemic and threatened species:
- Criterion (x) – Exceptional Biodiversity and Habitat for Endemic Species: The park contains a greater diversity of mammal species than any other reserve in the Albertine Rift. It protects the most vital wild population of the endangered Grauer’s gorilla (Gorilla beringei graueri), an endemic subspecies confined to eastern DRC. The property spans a continuous floral transition from 600 meters to over 2,600 meters elevation, preserving rare swamp forests, high-altitude bogs, and over 1,170 plant species, including the endemic Senecio kahuzicus.
Gateway
Travelers planning a visit to Kahuzi-Biega National Park can access the site via the following practical Congolese gateway city featuring a public IATA-listed airport searchable directly in IATA’s directory, lodging infrastructure, and tour services:
- Bukavu (Primary Regional Gateway):
- Airport: Kavumu Airport (IATA Code: BKY; ICAO Code: FZMA).
- Infrastructure and Distance: Located approximately 30 kilometers south of the Tshivanga park entrance. Bukavu is the capital city of South Kivu Province, positioned on the southern tip of Lake Kivu. BKY is a domestic commercial airport searchable on IATA’s directory. Bukavu features extensive hotel options along the lakefront, ranging from mid-range business hotels to boutique eco-lodges. Licensed safari operators, park vehicles, and certified Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature (ICCN) guides run daily transfers and gorilla trekking tours straight from Bukavu to the park gates.
When
The ideal window to visit Kahuzi-Biega National Park is during the Dry Seasons (June to August and January to February):
- Primary Dry Season (June to August): Highly recommended for gorilla trekking. Trails are less muddy, footpaths through dense forest are easier to navigate, and rainfall is minimal. Temperatures average between 15°C and 25°C (59°F to 77°F).
- Secondary Dry Season (January to February): Offers dry, clear conditions with lower humidity, facilitating comfortable mountain hikes up Mount Kahuzi.
- Wet / Rainy Seasons (March to May and September to December): Features heavy tropical downpours and humid conditions; trails become slippery and challenging to trek, though fruit abundance during wet months often keeps gorilla groups lower down the slopes.
Consideration
- Security and Travel Advisories: Eastern DRC experiences periodic regional instability and security fluctuations. Visitors must check updated travel advisories from their home governments and coordinate closely with the park authority (ICCN) before traveling.
- Gorilla Trekking Permits: Permits are mandatory and strictly limited per day to protect habituated gorilla groups. Reservations must be secured months in advance through official park channels or licensed tour agencies.
- Physical Fitness and Trekking Gear: Tracking gorillas involves hiking through dense jungle foliage, steep muddy inclines, and high elevations. Sturdy waterproof hiking boots, long thick trousers, long-sleeved shirts, gaiters, gardening gloves (for gripping thorny vines), and rain gear are essential.
- Health Requirements: Visitors must show proof of Yellow Fever vaccination upon entry into DRC. Anyone showing signs of communicable illness (flu, cold) will not be allowed on gorilla treks to protect primates from human pathogens.
- Currency and Payments: US Dollars (USD) are universally accepted for official permits, park fees, hotels, and guides. Banknotes must be crisp, un-torn, and issued after 2013; carrying cash is necessary as card terminals are limited.
