Why Mexico is in the heart of a Miss Universe; Margie Moran-Floirendo; Inquirer Lifestyle

Mexico holds an eternal fascination in Margie Moran-Floirendo’s heart, a special place of treasured memories. It all started in 1978 when she opened the Miss Universe contest at the Plaza del Zocalo (now Plaza de la Constitucion) in Mexico City. She introduced the country’s cultural heritage to the strains of vibrant mariachi music, and that electric moment remains one of her most memorable best. In a recent bout of adventure, her sister Lulette, her daughter Gabbi and she decided to return to Mexico and visit the country’s Yucatan Peninsula, provenance of the mystical Mayan culture.

20 Lost Cities of the Ancient World that Were Rediscovered; Luxatic

Mexico – Ancient Maya City and Protected Tropical Forests of Calakmul, Campeche

We were always fascinated by tales and legends of lost cities or abandoned places forgotten in the depths of time, and history never lacked of stories about them.

Throughout time, explorers ventured into far corners of our world with the hope of discovering such places. From El Dorado, the city of gold, to cities destroyed by natural disasters, war and social upheaval or to Atlantis itself, we were and are continuously fascinated by these tales.

History shows accounts of various forgotten cities, some of them revealed but others, like Thinis, Atil or Gangga Negara that are yet to be discovered, so explorers and historians continue their quests.

But now let’s take a look at The Top 20 Rediscovered Lost Cities:

“Is Mexico safe?” It’s a question many American travelers have asked themselves, especially in the wake of a sweeping security alert for Mexico issued by the U.S. State Department in early March 2018. Such travel advisories can be confusing, but this one is pretty clear and even includes a color-coded map revealing the most dangerous (marked in red) and safest places in Mexico (marked in yellow).

Mexico is a vast country, with heaps of beautiful and interesting places to see, and some 28 million Americans safely travel there each year. The Safest Places in Mexico

Keep in mind that bad things can happen even in the safest places in Mexico, and destinations that don’t appear on this list could still be great spots for a vacation.

It features a trio of noted Mayan sites and other cultural and historical highlights in the three states that comprise the peninsula — Quintana Roo, Yucatán and Campeche. The all-inclusive fares cover the 9-night cruise plus 2-nights’ stay in Campeche and air between Miami and Campeche at the beginning or end of your cruise. The port stops include Key West, Florida, and along the Yucatán peninsula, Porto Morelos, Progreso, and then Campeche.

The inaugural “Grand Mayan Experience” cruise departs PortMiami Jan. 4, 2019, on the newly remodeled, 202-passenger VICTORY II, the sister of VICTORY I (which currently sails to Cuba, Canada/New England and the Great Lakes).

There is a whole other side of this culturally vibrant country outside the typical tourist stomping grounds. So, instead of a repeat trip to yet another all-inclusive beachside resort (admittedly, there are some incredible ones), open your heart to the colorful locales and stunning colonial architecture you’ve been missing out on. Prepare yourself for a magical ride through five of Mexico’s most beautiful towns and cities.

Guanajuato

Considered the most romantic city in Mexico, Guanajuato is a UNESCO World Heritage site chock-full of gorgeous colonial buildings, colorful homes speckling hills, narrow alleys akin to Venice, and tree-lined plazas. Sigh.
