Visiting the Christmas Markets in Regensburg, Germany; Kiersten; The Blonde Abroad

Germany – Old town of Regensburg with Stadtamhof

Admired for its stunning medieval city center, the small city of Regensburg is one of Bavaria’s must-visit destinations. Located in southeastern Germany on the Danube River, I fell in love with this storybook town on an exploration of the greatest Christmas markets in Europe.

Nicknamed Italy’s northernmost city, this UNESCO World Heritage spot has a rich history and is chock full of architecture that is just begging to be Instagrammed.

About Regensburg

Regensburg is located about 80 miles from Munich and 140 miles from Salzburg.

A town of about 140,000 people, the closest airports are in Munich and Nuremberg, which is just about an hour away by train. It’s a bit off-the-beaten-path for most tourists but well worth a visit.

Regensburg has over two millennia of history, and that’s just one of the many reasons why history-buff travelers adore this town.

A Perfect Day Spent in Regensburg, Germany; Points And Travel

Germany – Old town of Regensburg with Stadtamhof

Come along with me as I share with you a perfect day spent in Regensburg, Germany. You will be pleasantly surprised.

In the early morning, we glided past cobbled lanes, underpasses, and archways out of Passau and towards the Black Forest near the UNESCO world heritage city of Regensburg. We passed small villages with their modestly tiny boardwalks along the river’s edge. We marveled from our balcony of the Viking River’s Elgin ship at the mystical landscape in the Autumn sun as we were ready to enjoy Bavaria’s famous white sausages, honey mustard, and locally crafted beer.

Upon arrival, my husband and I immediately hit the streets, ready for the day to begin with early morning shopping, photography, and simply spending more time with each other.

Germany – Old town of Regensburg with Stadtamhof

There’s more to a Viking River Cruise’s Christmas Market Cruise along the Danube River than shopping. Before each visit to the famous European markets, passengers take bus or walking tours of grand cities in Germany, Austria, and Hungary.

While visiting Regensburg, Germany — the oldest city on the Danube — we walked along the waterfront from the Viking Longship Njord to the city’s famous stone bridge that spans the river. Built between 1135 and 1146, the bridge with its 16 arches is a masterpiece of medieval engineering; it was one of the highlights of our tour through the city center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Our guide, a young woman with an encyclopedic knowledge of the city, told us that the first settlements in Regensburg date to the Stone Age. The Romans later built a fort here in the 1st century.
