Castel del Monte

Standing on a solitary hill in the Murgia region of Puglia, Castel del Monte is one of Italy’s most enigmatic and architecturally sophisticated landmarks. It is a masterpiece of the medieval era that defies traditional categorization.

Completed around 1240 by the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II, Castel del Monte is a unique octagonal fortress. Its design is based on the recurring theme of the number eight: the castle is an octagonal prism with eight octagonal towers at each corner.

The structure consists of two floors, each featuring eight trapezoidal rooms that encircle an internal octagonal courtyard. Unlike most castles of its time, it lacks typical defensive features like a moat, drawbridge, or arrow slits, leading many to believe it was never intended for military use. Its construction utilizes white limestone, reddish coral breccia, and marble, creating a striking chromatic effect that changes with the sun’s position.

Transport Logistics: The castle is isolated. If you aren’t driving, you must check the Line 6 bus schedule from Andria carefully, as it only runs during the tourist season.
Footwear: To reach the castle from the parking area, you can take a shuttle or walk up a steep, paved hill. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
Ticketing: It is highly recommended to pre-book your entry time online, as capacity is limited and the site frequently sells out during peak hours.
The Interior: Much of the original marble and furniture was looted centuries ago; do not expect a lavishly furnished palace. The attraction lies in the architecture, light, and geometry of the empty stone rooms.
