Białowieża Forest *

The Białowieża Forest is a pristine, ancient woodland straddling the border between Poland and Belarus, representing one of the last and largest remaining parts of the immense primeval forest that once stretched across the European Plain. In Poland, the core of this ecosystem is protected within the Białowieża National Park.

The forest is a complex mosaic of lowland mixed forests, comprising coniferous and broadleaved trees, many of which have reached grand, old ages. It is characterized by high levels of dead wood, which provides a unique habitat for fungi, insects, and rare bird species. The area is intersected by small rivers and wetlands, contributing to its diverse ecosystems.

Attraction

Tourists are drawn to Białowieża for its raw, unspoiled nature and unique wildlife spotting opportunities:

  • European Bison: The forest is home to the largest free-roaming population of European bison, Europe’s heaviest land animal, which was saved from extinction here.
  • Biodiversity: It is a paradise for birdwatchers and nature photographers, offering sightings of wolves, lynx, and rare birds like the pygmy owl.
  • Primeval Landscapes: Visitors can hike or cycle through forest areas that have remained relatively undisturbed for centuries, stepping back in time to experience a prehistoric landscape.

Heritage

The Białowieża Forest was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1979 (Poland) and extended in 1992 (Belarus) and 2014. It is recognized under Criteria (ix) and (x):

  • Criterion (ix): It is an outstanding example of ongoing ecological and biological processes in the evolution of terrestrial ecosystems, specifically lowland forests of Central Europe.
  • Criterion (x): It contains the most important and significant natural habitats for in-situ conservation of biological diversity, hosting a remarkable variety of species relict to primeval forests, and serving as the crucial stronghold for the European bison.

Gateway

While Białowieża village is located inside the forest, the best gateway city providing a commercial airport and sufficient lodging is Białystok.

  • Airport: The nearest major airport is Warsaw Chopin Airport (WAW), located about 200 km from Białystok. From Warsaw, you can reach Białystok by train or bus (approximately 2.5–3 hours).
  • Lodging: Białystok, as a regional capital, offers a wide range of hotels, apartments, and restaurants. From here, travelers can easily hire a car or take local transport to Białowieża village (roughly 60 km away).

When

  • Late Spring to Early Autumn (May to October): This is the best time for hiking, cycling, and spotting wildlife as the forest is lush and active.
  • Winter (December to February): Winter offers the best visibility for wildlife watching, particularly for bison, as they are less hidden by foliage and often gather near feeding stations.

Consideration

  • Guide Required: Access to the strict Strictly Protected Area of the National Park is only permitted with a licensed guide.
  • Border Considerations: The forest straddles the border with Belarus. Be aware of border restrictions and regulations if you plan to visit the Belarusian side.
  • Accommodation: Book accommodation in Białowieża village well in advance, especially during the summer peak season.
  • Preparation: Bring mosquito repellent, sturdy walking shoes, and binoculars.

If you look under the bark, there’s a lot of beetles, a lot of spiders — everything, whatever you want, and this is how it works. This is why I compare the Bialowieza Forest to coral reef — because in coral reef, a lot of life is based also on the dead corals. So this works like that.
