The following are the heritage sites, grouped into recommended gateway cities. This may help in planning on the logistics (travel and accommodation) of your journey.
ASMARA (ASM)
Asmara, Eritrea’s high-altitude capital, is a vibrant “time capsule” of 1930s Italian Modernism. Known as “Africa’s Little Rome,” this UNESCO World Heritage city features the world’s most concentrated collection of Art Deco architecture, like the iconic Fiat Tagliero building. Travelers stroll palm-lined Harnet Avenue for the evening “passeggiata,” enjoying authentic macchiatos at vintage cafes. While exceptionally safe, Asmara offers a true digital detox; it remains a cash-only economy with limited internet. From the bustling Medebar Market to the haunting Tank Graveyard, the city provides a unique, slow-paced encounter with history and warm Eritrean hospitality.
