CHILE

The following are the heritage sites, grouped into recommended gateway cities. This may help in planning on the logistics (travel and accommodation) of your journey.

CASTRO (MHC)

Tucked within the mystical Chiloé Archipelago, Castro is Chile’s third-oldest city and a masterpiece of maritime timber architecture. It is world-renowned for its vibrant palafitos—colorful wooden houses perched on stilts over the water to withstand the dramatic Pacific tides. The city’s spiritual heart is the UNESCO-listed Church of San Francisco, a striking yellow and violet neo-Gothic cathedral built entirely of native wood using traditional boat-building techniques. As a gateway to the Valdivian rainforests of Chiloé National Park, Castro invites travelers to experience authentic Chilote culture, famous for its seafaring myths and the hearty curanto feast.
