Located in the Chubut Province of Argentine Patagonia, Península Valdés is a mushroom-shaped sanctuary jutting into the South Atlantic. This 3,600-square-kilometer reserve is a stark, treeless landscape of arid steppes and dramatic cliffs, famous for its deep, sheltered gulfs—Golfo Nuevo and Golfo San José—which provide some of the most vital nursery grounds for marine life on the planet.
Península Valdés is a coastal wilderness where the harsh Patagonian desert meets a nutrient-rich ocean.
- The Shoreline: Spanning 400 km, the coast features rocky headlands, shallow bays, and tidal mudflats.
- Terrestrial Life: The interior is home to hardy native species like the guanaco (a wild relative of the llama), rheas (flightless birds), and marás (Patagonian hares).
- Marine Hotspots: Key locations include Puerto Pirámides, the only village on the peninsula and the hub for boat tours, and Punta Norte, famous for its high-energy coastline.
Attraction
The peninsula is a world-class destination for megafauna encounters. Its unique geography allows for rare, intimate sightings of:
- Southern Right Whales: Known for their curiosity, these gentle giants often approach boats or can even be seen from the shoreline at El Doradillo Beach.
- The “Stranding” Orcas: At Punta Norte, a small population of Orcas has developed a globally unique hunting technique: intentionally beaching themselves to snatch sea lion pups from the shoreline.
- Elephant Seals and Sea Lions: The peninsula hosts the only breeding colony of Southern Elephant Seals on continental South America.

Heritage
Inscribed in 1999, the site is recognized under UNESCO Criterion (x) for its outstanding universal value in biodiversity conservation:
- Global Sanctuary: It is one of the world’s most critical breeding and calving grounds for the endangered Southern Right Whale, which has seen a remarkable population recovery thanks to the site’s protection.
- Scientific Importance: The unique hunting behaviors of the local orcas and the northernmost colonies of elephant seals make it a primary site for marine biology research.
Gateway
Puerto Madryn is the essential gateway, located approximately 100 km from the entrance of the peninsula.
- Airport: El Tehuelche Airport (PMY) serves the city directly with commercial flights from Buenos Aires. Alternatively, Almirante Marcos A. Zar Airport (REL) in nearby Trelew (60 km away) handles larger aircraft and more frequent flights.
- Lodging: Puerto Madryn is a modern coastal city with extensive options, from the upscale Hotel Rayentray to boutique heritage stays like Hotel Welsh. It offers the infrastructure necessary for multi-day stays, including world-class seafood dining and car rental services.
When
- Peak Wildlife (September – November): This is the “sweet spot” when whales, penguins, and elephant seals are all present in high numbers.
- Whale Season (June – December): Whales arrive in June and peak in October.
- Orca Hunting (March – April): This is the best window to witness the intentional stranding at Punta Norte, though sightings are never guaranteed.
- Penguin Season (September – March): Over 300,000 Magellanic penguins nest in the area during this time.

Consideration
- Gravel Roads: Once you pass the paved entrance, most roads on the peninsula are loose gravel (ripio). Drive slowly (max 60 km/h) to avoid skidding or flipping the vehicle.
- Tide Times: Wildlife activity—especially orca hunting—is highly dependent on high tide. Check the tide charts at the interpretation center before heading to the coast.
- Wind and Sun: Patagonia is notoriously windy and the sun is intense despite cool temperatures (15°C to 22°C). Wear high-SPF sunscreen and wind-resistant layers.
- Distance: The peninsula is massive. A round trip from Puerto Madryn covering the main points can exceed 400 km. Ensure your rental car has a full tank of gas, as fuel is only available in Puerto Pirámides.
