Canterbury Cathedral, St Augustine’s Abbey, and St Martin’s Church

In the historic city of Canterbury in Kent, England, three remarkable sites form a single UNESCO World Heritage property: Canterbury Cathedral, St Augustine’s Abbey, and St Martin’s Church. Together, they represent the very cradle of English Christianity.

This collective site traces the reintroduction of Christianity to Anglo-Saxon England starting in 597 CE:

  • St Martin’s Church: The oldest church in the English-speaking world still in use. It contains Roman brickwork and was the private chapel of Queen Bertha before St Augustine arrived.
  • St Augustine’s Abbey: The ruins of a great Benedictine monastery founded by Augustine to house his fellow monks and serve as a burial place for the Kings of Kent.
  • Canterbury Cathedral: The spiritual heart of the Church of England. This “breathtaking mixture” of Romanesque and Gothic architecture has been the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury for over 1,400 years.

Attraction

Canterbury has been a premier pilgrimage destination for nearly a millennium, immortalized in Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales.

  • Thomas Becket: Tourists flock to the Cathedral to see the site of the 1170 martyrdom of Archbishop Thomas Becket, once the most famous shrine in Europe.
  • Stained Glass: The Cathedral houses one of the world’s most significant collections of early medieval stained glass, including the “Ancestors of Christ” series.
  • Royal History: The site contains the tombs of Henry IV and Edward the Black Prince, making it a cornerstone for fans of British royal history.

Heritage

Inscribed in 1988, the site meets UNESCO Criteria (i), (ii), and (vi):

  • Artistic Mastery: The Cathedral is a unique artistic creation, particularly its Early Gothic choir and the Perpendicular Gothic Nave.
  • Historical Influence: St Augustine’s Abbey was a decisive monastic center throughout the Middle Ages, significantly influencing education and literacy across Britain.
  • Universal Association: The three buildings are tangibly linked to the history of the introduction of Christianity to the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, an event of immense significance to Western civilization.

Gateway

While Canterbury is a city itself, London serves as the primary international gateway.

  • Airports: London Gatwick (LGW) and London Heathrow (LHR) are the best commercial hubs. From London St Pancras, high-speed trains reach Canterbury in under 60 minutes.
  • Lodging: For an immersive experience, you can stay at the Canterbury Cathedral Lodge, located directly within the Cathedral precincts. The city also offers numerous historic inns like The Falstaff.

When

  • Spring (April–June): The gardens are in full bloom, and the weather is mild.
  • Autumn (September–October): Fewer crowds and beautiful fall colors in the Kent countryside.
  • December: A magical time to hear the world-famous Cathedral Choir during the Christmas services.

Consideration

  • Working Cathedral: The Cathedral is a place of daily worship. Some areas may be restricted during services like Choral Evensong (usually 17:30), though attending a service is free.
  • Distance: While the Cathedral is central, St Martin’s Church is a 15-minute walk away. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
  • Booking: During peak summer months, it is wise to book Cathedral tickets online to skip the queues.
  • Combined Tickets: Check for joint entry options if you plan to visit the Abbey (run by English Heritage) and the Cathedral on the same day.
