Abbey of St Gall

The Abbey of St Gall (Stiftsbezirk St. Gallen) is a monumental Benedictine monastery complex in the city of St. Gallen, Switzerland. It is widely regarded as one of the most important cultural and intellectual centers of the Middle Ages in Europe.

The site is a sprawling architectural ensemble that reflects over 1,200 years of history.

  • The Cathedral: A late-Baroque masterpiece built between 1755 and 1767. Its twin towers dominate the skyline, and its interior is renowned for its light-filled nave and intricate stucco work.
  • The Abbey Library: One of the oldest and most beautiful libraries in the world. The Rococo-style “Seelenapotheke” (healing place of the soul) houses 170,000 volumes, including rare 7th-century Irish manuscripts.
  • The Vaulted Cellar: A permanent exhibition space that traces the history of the site from the original hermitage of the Irish monk Gallus (612 CE) to the present day.
  • The Monastery Plan: The site preserves the Plan of St. Gall, the only surviving architectural drawing from the period between the fall of the Roman Empire and the 13th century.

Attraction

The Abbey attracts travelers for its unparalleled artistic and scholarly heritage:

  • The “Seelenapotheke”: Visitors come to see the Library’s breathtaking vaulted ceiling frescoes and the Egyptian mummy, Shepenese, who has resided there since 1820.
  • Baroque Splendor: The Cathedral is a pilgrimage site for fans of Baroque and Rococo architecture, offering some of the most detailed craftsmanship in Switzerland.
  • St. Gallen Old Town: The Abbey is surrounded by a charming pedestrian zone famous for its 171 carved “Oriel Windows” (bay windows), making the entire area a visual delight.

Heritage

Inscribed in 1983, the Abbey was recognized for its “Outstanding Universal Value”:

  • Criterion (ii): It was a primary center of the Carolingian Renaissance, influencing the religious and cultural development of Western Europe.
  • Criterion (iv): The complex is a “perfect example” of a large Carolingian monastery. Even though the current buildings are mostly 18th-century Baroque, they follow the historical footprint and spiritual continuity of the original medieval foundation.
  • Documentary Heritage: The library’s collection is part of the UNESCO “Memory of the World” register.

Gateway

  • The Gateway: While St. Gallen is the host city, Zurich serves as the primary gateway.
  • Airport: Zurich International Airport (ZRH) is Switzerland’s largest commercial hub.
  • Transit: Direct trains run from Zurich Airport to St. Gallen twice an hour, taking approximately 60 minutes.
  • Lodging: St. Gallen offers excellent options like the Einstein St. Gallen (near the Abbey) or the Radisson Blu. Zurich offers a vast array of luxury and budget options if you prefer to visit as a day trip.

When

  • Spring & Autumn (May, June, September): Ideal for pleasant walking weather and smaller crowds.
  • December: The St. Gallen Christmas Market is one of Switzerland’s most beautiful, featuring a giant Christmas tree in front of the Cathedral.
  • Avoid: Large university events or the “OLMA” agricultural fair (October) if you want to avoid peak hotel prices and crowded streets.

Consideration

  • The Slippers: To protect the 18th-century inlaid wood floors of the Library, all visitors must wear massive felt over-slippers provided at the entrance.
  • Silence and Photography: The Library is a place of study; total silence is required, and photography is strictly forbidden inside the Library hall (though allowed in the Cathedral).
  • Swiss Travel Pass: Entry to the Library and exhibitions is covered by the Swiss Travel Pass, which can save you the ~18 CHF entry fee.
  • Cloakroom: Large bags and backpacks must be left in lockers (free of charge) before entering the Library.
