Berlin Modernism Housing Estates

The Berlin Modernism Housing Estates (Siedlungen der Berliner Moderne) constitute a serial UNESCO World Heritage site consisting of six distinct residential complexes built in Berlin between 1913 and 1934. These estates represent a revolutionary period in urban planning and social reform during the Weimar Republic, aimed at providing high-quality, sanitary, and affordable housing for low-income residents. The projects were led by visionary architects, including Bruno Taut, Walter Gropius, and Martin Wagner, who departed from traditional cramped tenement styles to prioritize functionalism, hygiene, light, air, and integration with green spaces.

The six estates are spread across different districts of Berlin:

Gartenstadt Falkenberg (Grünau): Known for its vibrant colors and garden-city concept, designed by Taut.
Siedlung Schillerpark (Wedding): Inspired by Dutch brick architecture, also by Taut.
Großsiedlung Britz (Neukölln): Famous for the “Horseshoe Estate” (Hufeisensiedlung), a striking U-shaped building surrounding a pond, designed by Taut and Wagner.
