The Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe in Germany represent the last remnants of the vast wilderness that once blanketed the continent. While the UNESCO property spans 18 countries, the German component protects five specific forest areas: Jasmund, Serrahn (Müritz National Park), Grumsin, Hainich, and Kellerwald-Edersee. These are not just “parks”; they are ecological time capsules where the European beech (Fagus sylvatica) has reigned supreme since the end of the last Ice Age.
The German sections cover roughly 4,400 hectares of diverse landscapes. Each of the five areas showcases a different face of the beech forest:
- Jasmund (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania): Famous for its “chalk cliffs,” where white limestone drops into the Baltic Sea, framed by ancient beeches clinging to the edge.
- Serrahn (Müritz): A hilly, lake-studded landscape that was once a private hunting ground for grand dukes, ensuring the trees remained untouched for centuries.
- Grumsin (Brandenburg): Located just an hour from Berlin, it features deep glacial valleys and swampy hollows.
- Hainich (Thuringia): A former military restricted zone that allowed nature to reclaim the land into a “jungle” of biodiversity.
- Kellerwald-Edersee (Hesse): A vast “sea of beech trees” covering steep, rocky slopes overlooking the fjord-like Lake Edersee.
Attraction
Travelers are drawn to these forests for their pristine “Fairytale” atmosphere. Unlike managed timber forests, these areas are filled with gnarled, centuries-old giants and decaying “deadwood” that supports thousands of species.
- The Treetop Walks: Hainich and Jasmund offer spectacular canopy walks, allowing you to stroll through the treetops.
- Seasonal Spectacles: In spring, the forest floor is a carpet of white wild garlic and wood anemones; in autumn, the “Beech Cathedral” turns a brilliant, glowing copper.
- Rare Wildlife: It is a sanctuary for the elusive European wildcat, black storks, and white-tailed eagles.

Heritage
Inscribed in 2011 (as an extension of the Carpathian site), Germany’s beech forests meet Criterion (ix). They are recognized as the most outstanding examples of the post-glacial expansion of the European beech. This single species’ ability to re-colonize almost an entire continent from small southern refuges is a unique biological phenomenon that is still actively evolving in these protected German stands.
Gateway
Because the forests are scattered, the best gateway depends on which “leaf” you wish to visit:
- For Grumsin & Serrahn: Berlin is the ideal gateway. Fly into Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER).
- For Kellerwald-Edersee: Frankfurt is the best choice. Fly into Frankfurt International Airport (FRA).
- Lodging: Both cities offer thousands of options. For a closer stay, the town of Angermünde (near Grumsin) or Sassnitz (near Jasmund) provides charming local inns.
When
- May to June: For the “fresh green” phase when the new leaves create a luminous, translucent canopy and wildflowers are in peak bloom.
- October: For the Golden Autumn. The transformation of the beech leaves into deep shades of orange and gold is world-class.
- Winter: For a silent, stark beauty, especially in Jasmund where the white cliffs meet the grey sea.

Consideration
- Stay on Marked Paths: These are strict reserves. Leaving the trail is forbidden to protect the fragile forest floor and “micro-jungles” of fungi.
- Footwear: German forests can be damp and muddy even in summer. Waterproof hiking boots are essential.
- Tick Protection: Like many European forests, ticks are present; wear long trousers and use repellent.
- Digital Prep: Download the “Weltnaturerbe Buchenwälder” app before you go—it provides offline maps and audio guides for the specific UNESCO zones.
