The Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) Forest Park Selangor is Malaysia’s addition to the UNESCO World Heritage list, having been inscribed in 2025. It represents a global gold standard for ecological restoration and a successful “man-made” forest ecosystem.
Located in Kepong, approximately 16 kilometers northwest of Kuala Lumpur, FRIM Forest Park Selangor is a 545-hectare mature human-made tropical rainforest. In the early 1920s, this land was a barren wasteland, heavily degraded by intensive tin mining. Through the pioneering work of scientists and local workers starting in 1926, the area was systematically reforested.
Today, it is a thriving, multi-layered forest that mimics a natural lowland tropical rainforest. It serves as a living laboratory for tropical forestry, housing a campus of historic scientific buildings (like the Art Deco Villa Aromatica), arboreta, a herbarium, and a vast network of nature trails and research plots.
Attraction
FRIM offers a unique blend of scientific history and breathtaking nature that is accessible from a major metropolis:
- The Forest Skywalk: This is the park’s crown jewel. A 250-meter long walkway suspended up to 50 meters above the forest floor, it offers panoramic views of the forest canopy and the Kuala Lumpur skyline.
- Crown Shyness: The park is one of the best places in the world to observe the phenomenon of “crown shyness,” where the tops of Kapur trees (Dryobalanops aromatica) do not touch each other, creating a beautiful jigsaw-like pattern against the sky.
- Biodiversity in an Urban Setting: Despite its man-made origins, it hosts over 2,300 plant species and a diverse array of fauna, including hornbills and monkeys, making it a “green lung” for the Klang Valley.
- Heritage Architecture: The campus features colonial-era buildings and traditional Malay-style timber houses that reflect the social and scientific history of forestry in Malaysia.

Heritage
UNESCO inscribed FRIM under Criterion (iv) as an outstanding example of a cultural landscape and a model for ecological restoration.
- Pioneering Ecological Restoration: It is one of the earliest and most successful large-scale examples of transforming “dead” mining land into a high-biodiversity rainforest. It serves as an international benchmark for sustainable land rehabilitation.
- Continuous Scientific Record: The site preserves a century-old record of tropical silviculture (the growth of trees). The field planting records and the evolution of the forest provide invaluable data for global reforestation efforts in the face of climate change.
- Cultural Landscape: It represents the fusion of Western scientific methods with local traditional knowledge, creating a unique social and scientific heritage.
Gateway
Kuala Lumpur (KL) serves as the primary gateway to FRIM.
- Commercial Airport: Most visitors arrive via Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL), which is about an hour’s drive away. For regional travelers, Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (Subang Airport – SZB) is even closer, roughly 20–30 minutes from the park.
- Lodging: Being adjacent to the capital, visitors have thousands of lodging options. Many choose to stay in the Kepong or Damansara areas for closer access, or in the KL City Centre (KLCC) for a mix of urban luxury and easy transit to the park via ride-hailing services (Grab) or the KTM Komuter (Kepong Station).
When
The best time to visit is during the dry season (March to October).
- Daily Timing: It is highly recommended to arrive as early as possible (8:00 AM). Morning temperatures are cooler, and wildlife activity is at its peak.
- Avoid Weekends: To experience the tranquility of the forest without the crowds, a weekday visit (Tuesday–Thursday) is ideal.

Consideration
- Booking the Skywalk: Tickets for the Forest Skywalk are highly popular and often sell out. It is essential to book online in advance via the official FRIM portal.
- Guided Treks Only: Since 2016, most of the inner nature trails are closed to solo walkers to prevent soil erosion. You must hire a licensed FRIM nature guide if you wish to explore the deeper forest trails.
- Attire: Wear sturdy walking shoes or sneakers. Dress modestly if you plan to visit the administrative or research areas; breathable, moisture-wicking clothes are best for the humidity.
- Strict Rules: FRIM is a Research & Development institution, not a public park. Drones, pets, and littering are strictly prohibited. Always check the Air Pollution Index (API) before going, as outdoor activities may be restricted if the API exceeds 100.
