LAO PEOPLE’S DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC

The following are the heritage sites, grouped into recommended gateway cities. This may help in planning on the logistics (travel and accommodation) of your journey.

LUANG PRABANG (LPQ)

Luang Prabang is the spiritual heart of Laos, a UNESCO World Heritage town gracefully set at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers. Renowned for its harmonious blend of traditional Lao timber houses and elegant French colonial architecture, the town offers a serene atmosphere defined by saffron-clad monks and golden-roofed temples. Visitors are drawn to the meditative dawn Alms Giving ceremony, the shimmering mosaics of Wat Xieng Thong, and the turquoise cascades of Kuang Si Falls. With its vibrant night market and slow-paced river life, Luang Prabang remains Southeast Asia’s most enchanting window into a bygone era.

SAVANNAKHET (ZVK)

Savannakhet, often called “Savan,” is the laid-back capital of Laos’ largest province and a significant trade hub along the Mekong River. Known for its atmospheric French Quarter, the city features crumbling colonial villas and Art Deco landmarks like the Lao Chaleun Cinema. Beyond its architecture, Savannakhet is home to the sacred 16th-century That Ing Hang Stupa and a unique Dinosaur Museum showcasing regional fossils. Evenings center on the lively Talat Yen Plaza, where travelers can sample local grilled chicken (ping gai) and street food while enjoying the “City of Paradise’s” quintessential, sleepy charm.

VIENTIANE (VTE)

Vientiane, the serene capital of Lao PDR, is a charming riverside city where French colonial architecture and gilded Buddhist temples line peaceful, tree-fringed boulevards. Situated along the Mekong River, the city’s landmark is the shimmering Pha That Luang, a golden stupa that serves as a national symbol. Visitors can explore the historic Wat Si Saket, home to thousands of Buddha statues, or climb the Patuxai Victory Gate for panoramic views. With its “sabai-sabai” (laid-back) atmosphere, Vientiane is a culinary delight, offering everything from traditional laap and sticky rice to world-class French pastries and sunset sundowners by the river.
