The Birthplace of Jesus: Church of the Nativity and the Pilgrimage Route, Bethlehem is a serial UNESCO World Heritage site located in the West Bank, State of Palestine. It encompasses the 6th-century Church of the Nativity—built over the cave traditionally identified as the birthplace of Jesus Christ—along with adjacent convents, terraced gardens, and the historical Star Street, which forms the final section of the ancient pilgrimage route from Jerusalem.
The site is anchored by the Church of the Nativity, one of the oldest continuously operating Christian churches in the world.
- The Basilica: Originally commissioned by Emperor Constantine in 339 AD and rebuilt by Justinian in the 6th century, the basilica features stunning remnants of 12th-century mosaics and monolithic columns.
- The Grotto: Directly beneath the altar lies the Grotto of the Nativity, where a 14-pointed silver star embedded in the marble floor marks the precise traditional spot of Jesus’ birth.
- Pilgrimage Route: Star Street is the historic entryway into Bethlehem, fossilized by urban development since the 19th century and still used ceremonially during Christmas celebrations.

Gateway
Because Bethlehem does not have its own commercial airport, travelers must use one of two regional hubs:
- Tel Aviv (Israel): * Airport:Ben Gurion International Airport (TLV) is the primary hub, located about 60–90 minutes from Bethlehem.
- Lodging: Tel Aviv offers world-class beachfront hotels and modern hostels.
- Access: Most travelers take a bus or train to Jerusalem, then a short 20-minute bus or taxi across the checkpoint into Bethlehem.
- Amman (Jordan):
- Airport: Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) is a major hub for those traveling from the East.
- Lodging: Amman offers high-end options like the St. Regis and cozy boutique stays in its historic hilly districts.
- Access: Travelers cross into the West Bank via the King Hussein (Allenby) Bridge. This involves a 1-hour drive from Amman to the border, followed by customs and a 1.5-hour drive to Bethlehem.
When
- Best Weather: Spring (April to May) and Autumn (September to October) offer pleasant, mild temperatures suitable for walking the pilgrimage route.
- Festive Experience: The Christmas Season (December to early January) is the most magical time to visit, featuring special masses and celebrations. Note: This period is extremely crowded, and booking lodging months in advance is essential.
- Quieter Visit: February to March offers fewer crowds while still maintaining comfortable weather.
