Statue of Liberty Museum wins Gold in 2020 Building Team Awards; Robert Cassidy; Building Design + Construction Magazine

After September 11, 2001, the Statue of Liberty Museum, which was then located in the statue’s pedestal, was closed to 80% of visitors due to security restrictions. Those restrictions ended on May 16 with the opening of the new Statue of Liberty Museum, which gives every visitor the opportunity to experience the story of “Liberty Enlightening the World.”

The American Institute of Architects has declared its support for UNESCO after the US announced it is pulling out of the organisation.

AIA urges Trump to continue UNESCO’s architecture and design initiatives after withdrawal

The American Institute of Architects has declared its support for UNESCO after the US announced it is pulling out of the organisation, and encouraged President Donald Trump’s administration to preserve initiatives that “reinforce the value and importance of architecture and design”.

The AIA released a statement yesterday highlighting the importance of UNESCO, following the US Department of State announcement last week that it would be withdrawing from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), due to “the need for fundamental reform in the organisation”.

After leaving, the US will act as a non-member observer state that contributes “views, perspectives and expertise” to UNESCO’s key issues.

PARIS (AP) — Naming World Heritage sites — places like the Egyptian pyramids or the Statue of Liberty that are given a special U.N. status and protection — is one of the many programs run by UNESCO.

The U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization has long faced accusations of corruption, mismanagement and political bias in its resolutions and the United States and Israel said Thursday they would leave the agency because of what they said was a longstanding anti-Israel bias and the need for reform.

Beyond the diplomatic disputes, here’s a look at some things that UNESCO does:

WORLD HERITAGE SITES

Its World Heritage Committee each year designates sites considered “of outstanding value to humanity” and intervenes when sites are in danger of destruction or damage.
