Under threat! The natural wonder of the Pantanal; Stars Insider
The Pantanal, the world’s largest freshwater wetland, is burning! Over the last few months vast swathes of this beautiful but fragile ecosystem has been destroyed by devastating forest fires, mostly caused by human activities. Extreme drought throughout 2020 has blighted the region. Rainfall is 50% less than it was the previous year which has left some lakes, rivers, and swamps completely dry. Compounding these effects of climate change is deforestation of the nearby Amazon. Together with the mostly illegal burning of land by farmers for cattle and soy, ideal conditions for the spread of these fires have been created—and now they are burning out of control!
