Sitting on the banks of the Yumana River in Agra, the Taj Mahal was originally commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, the fifth mogul emperor of India, as a resting place for his favorite wife Mumtaz Mahal after she died in childbirth. To construct it, the emperor enlisted the help of 22,000 workers toiling day and night as well as an army of over 1000 elephants!
