Montenegro – Natural and Culturo-Historical Region of Kotor

One of the most interesting and diverse countries on the European continent, it’s not hard to see why Montenegro is a major tourist draw. A popular entry point for cruise ships, Montenegro’s beautiful city of Kotor has been especially inundated with foreign visitors – and also the most recent destination to suffer from tourism woes.

A designated UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979 thanks to its well-preserved medieval architecture and natural Balkan beauty, Kotor is now at risk of losing that title. Recent years have seen the town construct excessive amounts of concrete buildings, hotels, tourism centers, and roads along its pristine coastline, thus threatening to “lead to the gradual yet irreversible transformation of the coastline as well as the abandonment of the traditional terraced structures.”
