Shimla: Shortage of wheels is beginning to take a toll on the Unesco world heritage Kalka-Shimla railway track. At this time of the year, when hordes of tourists take the toy trains running between Kalka and Shimla to usher in Christmas and New Year, the railways is faced with a peculiar problem. After successfuly replacing obsolete train engines with new ones, it has been caught in a situation of “lesser” wheels.
Sources told TOI that five toy trains run between Kalka and Shimla on a regular basis and the number increases to seven during peak tourist season in Shimla. Even in off season (June to September months), they receive around 500 ticket bookings daily. During peak season, when bookings increase 10 times, the special trains are put on track.
