In this country, a vast expanse of fascinating remains of various capitals of Khmer Empire ranging from the 9th to the 15th century can be found in the Angkor Archaeological Park. They include the famous Temple of Angkor Wat and, at Angkor Thom, the Bayon Temple with its countless sculptural decorations. UNESCO has set up a wide-ranging program to safeguard this symbolic site and its surroundings.

In an area roughly two times the size of the island of Manhattan lays Angkor.
